What is a beforeUdig Certified Locator?
Each locator has been through a rigorous assessment process to certify their competency in using electronic cable and pipe detection equipment and asset owner plans to accurately determine the location of underground utility cables and pipes. They will ordinarily provide a mark out on the ground surface using paint to indicate type, position and depth of the detected asset . They are also able to provide other services like mapping and standovers to observe your works.
Is a beforeUdig Certified Locator approved by the utility owners in the area of my excavation?
No, any work you engage a certified locator to undertake will be performed directly between you and the locator. Utility network owners and beforeUdig will not take any liability for any issues arising from any locates provided.
Do utility owners still provide their own locates?
Yes, a utility owner will continue to provide the same level of service prior to this update which may or may not include a locate. You should continue to select the ‘Yes’ option and add a preferred locate date and where the utility network owner provides any locates, standovers or any other asset protection services they will continue to liaise directly with you.
Will a certified locator be notified by beforeUdig if I select ‘Yes’ for locate?
No – Selecting ‘Yes’ for locate will inform only the utility network owners in your area of excavation that you require a locate. Note that not all network owners provide a locate and those that do may charge a fee for these services. Please check the documentation that you receive along with plans from each networks owner which will detail their requirements, if they provide a locate and if these is a cost for the locate.
Do certified locators provide ‘free’ locates for my beforeUdig enquiry?
No – any engagement of a certified locator from the list will be at your own cost, please check directly with the certified locator for the cost of their services and expected payment terms.
If I engage a certified locator and I damage a cable or pipe still occurs who is liable?
As the excavator and damagee liability lies with the organisation or person that caused the damage, you should discuss any incidents of damage and resulting costs to repair directly with the asset owner.
