Residents in South Auckland’s Karaka were warned to stay indoors for several hours last night following a gas leak near a primary school.

Fire and Emergency NZ (Fenz) crews responded to Hingaia Rd at approximately 8.48pm after it was reported a tunnelling machine struck a gas main.

A fireman at the scene told a Herald photographer there was “a huge amount of gas going into the air”.

Papakura station officer Paul Beech said contractors putting in a sewer main struck and ruptured a 100mm gas pipeline.
