Two fire crews were dispatched to Clemow Rd about 1.30 pm following a report that a person had dug through a gas pipe.
New Plymouth senior station officer Jason Crowe said a homeowner had been installing fence posts when he dug through the gas main, causing it to rupture.
"We responded and had to dig up that area and put a gas clamp on to isolate the leak," Crowe said.During this work, firefighters donned breathing apparatus.
They remained on the scene until the gas authority took over.
A section of the road was also closed for a short time.
